Saint Hugh (1053-1132) was bishop of Grenoble in France for over fifty years, working tirelessly to reform his diocese and care for the poor. He famously welcomed Saint Bruno and his companions, granting them the mountain solitude where the Grande Chartreuse and the Carthusian Order began. He was canonized in 1134, just two years after his death.
Hugh repeatedly asked to resign and retire to monastic quiet, yet he obediently remained at his post, serving his people faithfully for decades despite illness and personal struggle. His perseverance shows that holiness often lies in humbly continuing the duties entrusted to us, and in generously supporting the good works of others.
