Gregory (c. 540–604) was born into a noble Roman family, served as Prefect of Rome, then became a monk and was elected pope in 590. As pope he reformed the Church, sent Augustine of Canterbury to evangelize England, and wrote influential works including the Pastoral Rule; Gregorian chant bears his name by tradition. He is one of the four great Latin Doctors of the Church.
Gregory called himself 'servant of the servants of God,' showing that true authority is exercised in humble service. Though he longed for monastic quiet, he accepted the burdens of leadership and cared tirelessly for the poor and for the Church's mission, teaching us to place duty and charity above personal preference.
O God, who care for your people with gentleness and rule them in love, through the intercession of Pope Saint Gregory grant a spirit of wisdom to those entrusted with leadership, that we may serve you with humble hearts. Amen.
