Saint Frumentius was a Syrian Christian who, along with his brother Aedesius, was shipwrecked on the coast of Aksum (modern Ethiopia) in the 4th century. They were taken into the service of the king and queen, and Frumentius eventually became a tutor to the young prince Ezana. After the prince ascended to the throne, Frumentius traveled to Alexandria and was consecrated as the first bishop of Aksum by Saint Athanasius.
Saint Frumentius's life exemplifies the power of witness and the call to evangelization even in unexpected circumstances. Despite being a captive, he used his position to introduce Christianity to a new land, ultimately leading to the conversion of a kingdom. His dedication to spreading the Gospel, even across cultural and geographical divides, inspires us to be instruments of God's grace wherever we are.
O God, who sent Saint Frumentius to bring the light of faith to the people of Ethiopia, grant us the courage to share your Gospel with all whom we encounter, that your kingdom may spread throughout the world. Amen.
