Francis was born in Assisi, Italy, around 1181, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. After a conversion experience, he renounced his inheritance to live in radical poverty, founded the Order of Friars Minor, and received the stigmata near the end of his life. He died in 1226 and was canonized just two years later.
Francis shows that joy comes not from possessions but from complete trust in God and love for all creation. His embrace of the poor, the sick, and even his enemies challenges us to see Christ in every person and to live the Gospel simply and literally.
Lord, make us instruments of your peace, that following Saint Francis we may love poverty of spirit and care for all your creation. Amen.
