Frances Xavier Cabrini was born in Italy in 1850 and founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Sent by Pope Leo XIII to care for Italian immigrants in America, she founded schools, orphanages, and hospitals across the United States and beyond. She died in Chicago in 1917 and in 1946 became the first United States citizen to be canonized a saint.
Mother Cabrini was small and often in frail health, yet she crossed the ocean dozens of times to reach people who were poor, sick, and far from home. Her life shows that great love is built from steady, practical acts of care — a bed for the sick, a school for a child, a welcome for the stranger. She trusted that God would supply the strength her own body lacked.
