Fidelis was born in Sigmaringen, Germany, in 1578 and first worked as a lawyer, becoming known as the 'advocate of the poor' before giving up his practice to join the Capuchin Franciscans. Sent to preach in Switzerland during a time of bitter religious division, he was martyred at Seewis in 1622 and was canonized in 1746.
Fidelis shows that gentleness and courage can live in the same heart: he served the poor and the sick without charge, and he kept preaching the faith even when he knew his life was in danger. His steady fidelity, right up to the end, reminds us that love is proven not in comfort but in perseverance.
