Eusebius was born in Sardinia around the year 283 and became the first bishop of Vercelli in northern Italy. He was the first Western bishop to live in community with his clergy, joining monastic life with pastoral ministry. Because he steadfastly defended the divinity of Christ against the Arian heresy, the emperor exiled him to the East, and he endured harsh treatment before returning home, where he died in 371.
Eusebius shows us how to hold fast to the truth about Jesus even when it costs dearly — exile, suffering, and separation from those he loved could not shake his faith. His life of prayer shared in community reminds us that faith is not carried alone, but together, each strengthening the other.
Lord God, who gave Saint Eusebius the courage to remain faithful through exile and trial, grant us that same steadfast trust in Your Son, and keep us close to one another in faith and love. Amen.
