Elizabeth (1207–1231) was a Hungarian princess who married Ludwig IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, and was widowed at just twenty years old. Devoted to the poor and sick, she embraced the Franciscan spirit, built a hospital at Marburg where she personally cared for the suffering, and gave away her wealth in service of others. She died at only twenty-four and was canonized just four years later, in 1235.
Elizabeth shows that a short life can hold immense love — she poured herself out for the poor and grieving without counting the cost. For a family carrying sorrow, her example is a reminder that tenderness toward others is itself a form of prayer, and that God treasures lives measured not in years but in love.
Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, friend of the poor and the suffering, teach us to love generously in the time we are given, and watch over Ben and all those we hold in our hearts. Amen.
