Saint Eleutherius was a sixth-century abbot of the monastery of Saint Mark near Spoleto, Italy, and later lived at Saint Andrew's monastery in Rome, where he died around the year 585. Nearly everything we know of him comes from Pope Saint Gregory the Great, who knew him personally and wrote of his simplicity, compunction, and the power of his tearful prayer, through which God worked healings and even the raising of a dead man.
Eleutherius shows that holiness needs no brilliance or position — only a humble heart that weeps and prays. Gregory the Great, one of history's greatest minds, looked at this simple monk and saw someone closer to God than himself. His life reminds us that quiet, childlike trust can carry more weight in heaven than all our striving.
Lord, give us the simple, trusting heart of Saint Eleutherius, that our prayers may rise to You with the honesty of tears; through his intercession, comfort all who mourn and draw them close to You. Amen.
