Dionysius was a member of the Areopagus, the learned court of Athens, who heard Saint Paul preach about the 'unknown God' and the resurrection and became one of his few Athenian converts (Acts 17:34). Ancient tradition, recorded by Eusebius, holds that he went on to become the first bishop of Athens and to give his life for the faith. He is commemorated on October 3 in the Roman Martyrology.
In a city full of clever arguments and half-hearted curiosity, Dionysius actually listened — and when the truth touched him, he let it change his whole life. He shows us that faith can take root even among skeptics, and that one open heart is worth more than a crowd of admirers. His example invites us to keep listening for God, especially when belief feels countercultural.
Lord, who opened the heart of Dionysius to the preaching of the resurrection, open our hearts to Your word, and give us the courage to follow wherever it leads. Amen.
