Saint Desiderius was bishop of Vienne in Gaul in the late sixth and early seventh centuries. Known for his learning and his bold preaching against corruption at the Frankish royal court, he was exiled through the influence of Queen Brunhilda and later put to death around the year 607, being honored as a martyr.
Desiderius shows us the courage to speak the truth even when it costs comfort, position, and finally life itself. His fidelity reminds us that a shepherd's love for his people includes the duty to call them to conversion, whatever the personal price.
Lord God, who gave Saint Desiderius the courage to proclaim your truth without fear, grant that we may bear faithful witness to you in word and deed, even when it is costly. Amen.
