Saint Denis was a third-century bishop sent from Rome to preach the Gospel in Gaul, where he became the first bishop of Paris. Around the year 250, during a Roman persecution, he was beheaded on the hill now called Montmartre together with his companions Rusticus and Eleutherius. He is honored as a martyr and as the patron saint of France.
Denis left everything familiar to carry the faith to a land that had never heard it, and he held to Christ even when it cost him his life. His courage reminds us that love is proven not in easy days but in faithful ones, and that the light of one steadfast heart can kindle faith in a whole people.
Lord, who gave Saint Denis the courage to remain faithful to the end, grant us that same steady trust in You, in sorrow and in hope. Amen.
