Conrad was a nobleman of Piacenza, Italy, born around 1290. While hunting he ordered brush set alight to flush game, and the fire spread and destroyed nearby farmland; when an innocent man was blamed, Conrad confessed and gave up nearly all his fortune in restitution. He and his wife then gave themselves to God — she entered the Poor Clares, and he became a Franciscan tertiary hermit, spending his last decades in prayer and penance near Noto in Sicily, where he died in 1351, kneeling in prayer.
Conrad shows us the beauty of an honest heart: he could have stayed silent and let another suffer, but he told the truth even though it cost him everything he owned. What looked like ruin became the doorway to a life of deep peace with God. His story reminds us that owning our mistakes, and trusting God with what comes after, can turn loss into grace.
Lord, give us the courage of Saint Conrad to speak the truth even when it costs us, and to find in every loss a path closer to You. Amen.
