Born Pietro Angelerio in Italy around 1215, he lived for decades as a humble hermit in the mountains of Abruzzo and founded the monastic community later known as the Celestines. In 1294, at nearly eighty years old, he was elected pope, but after only a few months he resigned the papacy, believing he could serve God better in prayer and solitude. He died in 1296 and was canonized in 1313.
Celestine shows us that holiness is not about holding on to power or position, but about honestly seeking where God wants us to be. His humility in laying down the world's highest office to return to a hidden life of prayer reminds us that in God's eyes, a quiet faithful heart matters more than any title.
