Saint Callistus I was a former slave who became a deacon in Rome, entrusted with overseeing the Christian burial grounds on the Appian Way now known as the Catacombs of Callistus. He was elected Bishop of Rome around 217 and served until about 222, when he died and was honored as a martyr. As pope he was known for extending mercy to repentant sinners, insisting that the Church could forgive even grave sins after sincere penance.
Callistus rose from slavery and personal disgrace to shepherd the whole Church, showing that God's grace is not limited by our past. His insistence on mercy for the repentant reminds us that the Church is a home for sinners seeking forgiveness, not a museum for the perfect. He encourages us to welcome others with the same compassion God has shown us.
O God, who raised up Pope Saint Callistus to serve the Church and to show mercy to sinners, grant through his intercession that we may trust in your forgiveness and extend it generously to others. Amen.
