Saint Bede (c. 673–735) was an English Benedictine monk who spent nearly his whole life at the monastery of Wearmouth-Jarrow in Northumbria, devoted to prayer, teaching, and scholarship. He wrote the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, earning him the title 'Father of English History,' along with many biblical commentaries. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1899.
Bede shows that holiness can flourish in a quiet, stable life of study and daily fidelity, offered entirely to God. His humility and diligence remind us that learning placed at the service of the Church becomes a lasting gift to others.
Lord, who enlightened Saint Bede with wisdom and love of your Word, grant that we may seek you diligently in study and prayer, and share what we learn with humble hearts. Amen.
