Saint Augustine of Hippo (354–430) was born in Tagaste, North Africa, to Saint Monica, who prayed for years for his conversion. After a restless youth searching through philosophy and worldly pursuits, he was baptized by Saint Ambrose in Milan and became Bishop of Hippo. His writings, including the Confessions and The City of God, made him one of the most influential Doctors of the Church.
Augustine shows us that no heart is too far from God to be found — his famous words, 'You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you,' speak to every soul that has wandered and longed for home. His mother's persistent prayers remind grieving and hoping families that love and prayer for our children are never wasted.
Saint Augustine, who found rest at last in the heart of God, pray that our restless hearts may find peace in Him, and that we may trust He holds those we love. Amen.
