Saint Anthony (c. 251–356) was born in Egypt and, after hearing the Gospel call to sell all and follow Christ, gave away his inheritance and withdrew into the desert to live a life of prayer and asceticism. He is honored as the father of Christian monasticism, and his long life of solitude, labor, and spiritual struggle drew many disciples who formed early monastic communities. His story was recorded by Saint Athanasius, whose Life of Anthony spread his example throughout the Church.
Anthony shows that a heart set wholly on God can let go of everything else and still be rich. In the silence of the desert he fought discouragement and temptation with steady prayer, teaching us that faithfulness is built one quiet day at a time. His example invites those who grieve or struggle to seek God in stillness, trusting that He is near even in the wilderness.
