He founded the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Claretians) and served as Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba, where he faced significant opposition for his reforms and anti-slavery stance. He later returned to Spain as confessor to Queen Isabella II.
