Saint Anselm was born in Aosta, Italy, around 1033 and became a Benedictine monk at the abbey of Bec in Normandy, where he served as prior and abbot. In 1093 he was made Archbishop of Canterbury, and he is honored as a Doctor of the Church for writings such as the Proslogion and Cur Deus Homo. He died on April 21, 1109.
Anselm is remembered for his motto 'faith seeking understanding' — he trusted God first, and let that trust lead him deeper into truth. He also stood firm for the freedom of the Church against kings, accepting exile twice rather than compromise. His life shows that a keen mind and a humble, prayerful heart can belong together.
