Agnes of Assisi (c. 1197–1253) was the younger sister of Saint Clare, whom she joined shortly after Clare left home in 1211 to follow the way of life inspired by Saint Francis. She became one of the first members of the Poor Clares at San Damiano and later served as abbess of the monastery of Monticelli near Florence, helping spread the new order. She returned to Assisi near the end of her life and died on November 19, 1253, a few months after her sister Clare.
Agnes shows that holiness can begin in youth and be sustained through a lifetime of hidden fidelity, prayer, and radical poverty. She embraced a demanding vocation despite strong family opposition, and her quiet perseverance beside her more famous sister reminds us that sanctity does not require the spotlight.
Lord Jesus, who called Saint Agnes of Assisi to leave everything and follow You in poverty and prayer, give us the courage to answer Your call generously and to persevere in faithfulness all our days. Amen.
