This memorial honors the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Loreto, tied to the Holy House in Loreto, Italy, venerated since the Middle Ages as the home of Mary in Nazareth. The shrine became one of the great pilgrimage sites of Europe, and Pope Francis inscribed the optional memorial on December 10 into the General Roman Calendar in 2019. Under this title Mary is honored as patroness of aviators and air travelers.
The house of Loreto recalls the hidden years of Nazareth, where the Word became flesh and grew up in an ordinary family. Mary's example there is one of quiet faithfulness — saying yes to God and living that yes in the small, daily acts of a home. She teaches us that holiness is woven into family life, patience, and trust.
Our Lady of Loreto, who made a home for Jesus in Nazareth, make our hearts and homes a dwelling place for your Son. Keep all who journey — and all whom we love — safe beneath your care. Amen.
