On November 9 the Church celebrates the Dedication of the Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome, consecrated by Pope Sylvester I around the year 324. It is the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome and bears the title 'mother and head of all the churches of the city and of the world.' Rather than honoring one saint, this feast honors the house of God where His people gather.
This feast reminds us that every church building points beyond itself: we ourselves are living stones, built into a dwelling place for God. Even when the walls of our lives feel shaken by loss, God does not abandon His temple — He makes His home in hearts that stay open to Him.
O God, who from living and chosen stones prepare an eternal dwelling for Your majesty, keep our family close to You, and gather us at last into Your house where no one is ever lost. Amen.
