Martha of Bethany was the sister of Mary and Lazarus, and a close friend of Jesus who welcomed him into her home. The Gospels show her serving the Lord at table, and after her brother's death she made one of the great professions of faith: 'You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.' Since 2021 the Church celebrates her together with Mary and Lazarus on this day.
Martha shows us that faith lives in ordinary acts of care — cooking, welcoming, keeping a home open to the Lord. Even in her grief for Lazarus, she went out to meet Jesus and trusted him, hearing his promise: 'I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.'
