Silverius, the son of Pope Saint Hormisdas, became Pope in 536 during the turbulent years of the Byzantine reconquest of Italy. Because he refused to restore a bishop who denied the true teaching about Christ, he was falsely accused, deposed through the intrigues of the imperial court, and exiled to the island of Palmaria, where he died of hunger and hardship in 537.
Silverius shows us that faithfulness matters more than position, comfort, or even life itself; he let go of the highest office in the Church rather than let go of the truth. His quiet endurance in exile reminds us that God sees every hidden suffering borne with love, even when the world forgets.
