John was born in Sahagún, Spain, around 1430 and, after serving as a diocesan priest, entered the Augustinian friars in Salamanca. He became a renowned preacher with a deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist, and his courage in speaking truth to the powerful helped reconcile the feuding factions that had long divided Salamanca. He died in 1479 and was canonized in 1690.
John shows that peace is not something we wait for but something we make, patiently, between real people who have hurt one another. His love for the Eucharist reminds us that closeness to Jesus is the source of the courage to speak gently and honestly. In a grieving family, his example invites us to be reconcilers and to bring every sorrow to the altar.
