Saint Boniface was born Winfrid in England around 675 and became a Benedictine monk before leaving as a missionary to the Germanic peoples, earning him the title Apostle of Germany. He organized the Church in Germany, founded monasteries including Fulda, and famously felled the sacred Oak of Thor at Geismar. He was martyred with his companions at Dokkum in Frisia in 754 while preparing candidates for confirmation.
Boniface left the security of his homeland and gave his whole life to bringing the Gospel to people who had never heard it, trusting God even unto death. His courage in the face of danger and his patient labor of building up the Church remind us that faith is meant to be shared, and that love is proven in perseverance.
