Marcellinus, a priest, and Peter, an exorcist, were martyred in Rome around the year 304 during the persecution of Diocletian. Tradition holds that they brought their jailer and his family to faith while imprisoned, and were beheaded in secret so their graves would not be honored — yet their resting place on the Via Labicana became so beloved that Constantine built a basilica over it. Their names are still spoken at the altar today in the first Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass.
Even in prison, with everything taken from them, Marcellinus and Peter kept giving — comforting others, sharing their faith, turning a place of fear into a place of hope. They remind us that love keeps working quietly even in the darkest rooms, and that a life the world tries to hide is never hidden from God. Those we love who have gone before us are remembered at the same altar where their names are still spoken.
