Born Giovanni Battista Montini in Concesio, Italy, in 1897, he served the Church as a priest, Vatican diplomat, and Archbishop of Milan before being elected pope in 1963. He guided the Second Vatican Council to its completion and became the first modern pope to travel the world, embracing the poor and pleading for peace before the United Nations. He died in 1978 and was canonized by Pope Francis in 2018.
