Nereus and Achilleus were Roman soldiers of the Praetorian Guard in the early centuries of the Church who converted to Christianity and refused to continue serving in the military. They were martyred for their faith and buried in the Catacomb of Domitilla in Rome, where Pope Damasus I later honored them with an inscription praising their courage in laying down their arms for Christ.
They show us that following Jesus can mean walking away from power and security when conscience demands it, trusting God with whatever comes next. Their quiet, costly faithfulness reminds us that true strength is found not in force but in love that holds firm to the end.
