Saint John of Ávila (1499–1569) was a Spanish priest and preacher so tireless in Andalusia that he became known as the 'Apostle of Andalusia.' He guided many great souls of his age, including Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of God, and wrote the spiritual classic 'Audi, filia.' He was canonized in 1970 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 2012.
John of Ávila spent his life gently leading others closer to God through patient words, letters, and friendship rather than grand deeds. He knew suffering — illness, false accusation, even imprisonment — yet let it deepen his tenderness instead of hardening him. His example shows that quiet faithfulness and kind counsel can carry God's light into many hearts.
