Bernadette Soubirous was born in 1844 in Lourdes, France, to a poor miller's family. In 1858, at age fourteen, she received eighteen apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the grotto of Massabielle, where a spring appeared that continues to draw pilgrims seeking healing. She later joined the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, lived humbly amid long illness, and died on April 16, 1879, at the age of thirty-five.

Bernadette shows that God chooses the small and the poor to carry His greatest messages, and she bore suffering and obscurity with quiet trust rather than seeking fame. Her simple faithfulness — 'I am charged to tell you, not to make you believe' — reminds us that our task is humble witness, and that heaven is close to those who suffer.

Saint Bernadette, humble messenger of Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us and for all who carry illness and sorrow, that we may trust God with the simplicity of your heart. Amen.
