Jonas and Barachisius were brothers and monks in fourth-century Persia who, during the persecution of King Shapur II around the year 327, went to comfort and encourage Christians imprisoned for their faith. Arrested themselves, they refused to renounce Christ and were put to death, and the Church has honored them as martyrs on this day since ancient times.
They did not wait in safety but went toward those who were suffering, strengthening frightened prisoners with their presence and their faith. Their gentle courage reminds us that love shows itself by standing beside others in their darkest hours, trusting God to the very end.
