Saint Lea was a wealthy Roman widow of the fourth century who, after her husband's death, gave up her comfortable life to join a community of consecrated women in Rome, eventually serving as its superior. Nearly everything we know of her comes from Saint Jerome, who praised her humility, her plain dress and austere life, and her nights spent in prayer. She died in the year 384.
Lea quietly traded status and comfort for a hidden life of prayer and service, showing that greatness in God's eyes is measured by love, not position. Jerome held her up against the powerful of Rome to remind us that a humble, faithful life outshines every worldly honor. Her example invites us to loosen our grip on what passes away and hold fast to what lasts.
