Saint Cuthbert (c. 634–687) was a monk of Melrose in northern Britain who became prior and later bishop of Lindisfarne, the holy island off the Northumbrian coast. He traveled tirelessly through remote villages to preach and care for the sick and poor, and spent years as a hermit on the Inner Farne, praying alone amid the sea and the birds he loved. He died on March 20, 687, and his shrine at Durham Cathedral became one of the great places of pilgrimage in England.
Cuthbert shows that great holiness can wear a gentle face: he was firm in faith yet endlessly patient with people, and at home both in busy service and in deep silence before God. His love for the wild places and creatures of the sea reminds us that all creation can draw the heart toward its Maker. In sorrow as in solitude, he trusted that God was near.
