Saint Cyril (c. 313–386) was bishop of Jerusalem during the turbulent years of the Arian controversy, and was exiled from his see three times for defending the true faith. He is best known for his catechetical lectures, given to those preparing for Baptism, which beautifully explain the Creed and the sacraments. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1883.
Cyril spent his life patiently teaching the faith to beginners, meeting people where they were and leading them gently toward the mysteries of God. Though repeatedly driven from his home, he returned each time without bitterness and kept teaching. He shows us how to hold onto faith with both firmness and tenderness, even through long trials.
