Saint Matilda (c. 895–968) was a Saxon noblewoman who became Queen of Germany as the wife of King Henry I and the mother of Emperor Otto the Great. Known for her deep prayer life and boundless generosity to the poor, she founded several monasteries, including the famous abbey at Quedlinburg. She endured great sorrow, including unjust accusations from her own sons, yet responded with patience and forgiveness.
Matilda shows us that holiness can grow in the middle of family life, even a family marked by conflict and grief. She forgave her sons when they wronged her and never let wealth or position harden her heart toward the poor. Her quiet, steady charity reminds us that love expressed in small, faithful acts outlasts every earthly crown.
