John Ogilvie was born in Scotland in 1579, converted to Catholicism as a young man, and became a Jesuit priest in Europe. He returned to Scotland in secret to minister to Catholics when the faith was outlawed, and after his arrest he endured imprisonment and torture without betraying anyone. He was hanged in Glasgow on March 10, 1615, and was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1976 as Scotland's first post-Reformation saint.
John Ogilvie stayed faithful and even gentle-hearted through suffering he did not choose, trusting that God's love was stronger than everything being taken from him. His courage reminds us that faith is not the absence of pain but the quiet decision to keep loving and hoping inside it, one day at a time.
