Saint John of God (1495–1550) was born in Portugal and lived a wandering life as a shepherd and soldier before a profound conversion in Granada, Spain, around age 40. He devoted the rest of his life to caring for the sick and the poor, founding a hospital in Granada where he personally nursed the suffering. His followers became the Brothers Hospitallers of Saint John of God, and he is a patron saint of the sick, of hospitals, and of nurses.
John found his calling late, after years of restlessness, showing that it is never too late to give one's life fully to love and mercy. He saw Christ in every sick and abandoned person he carried through the streets of Granada, and he served them with his own hands, holding nothing back. His example teaches gentle, practical compassion — love expressed in the humble work of caring for those who suffer.
