Saint Romanus (c. 390–460) left everything at about age thirty-five to live as a hermit in the forests of the Jura mountains, between what is now France and Switzerland. He was soon joined by his brother Lupicinus and many others, and together the brothers founded the monastery of Condat and guided a growing family of monks and nuns with gentleness and prayer.
Romanus shows that a quiet, hidden life given to God can bear fruit far beyond what anyone sees at the time. He was known for his patience and kindness, even embracing and caring for lepers whom others feared to touch, trusting that no act of love is ever wasted.
Lord, who called Saint Romanus into the silence of the forest to find You, teach us to seek You in quiet trust, and to love the forgotten as he did. Amen.Enter today’s Mass → All saints →
