Saint Polycarp (c. 69–155) was Bishop of Smyrna in Asia Minor and a disciple of Saint John the Apostle, making him a direct link to the apostolic age. He was martyred in old age, burned at the stake and pierced with a sword when the flames did not consume him, after refusing to renounce Christ, famously saying he had served Him for eighty-six years and would not deny Him.
Polycarp shows us a faithfulness that holds steady from youth to the very end of life, unshaken by fear or suffering. His calm courage at his martyrdom reminds us that a life rooted in Christ can face even death with peace and trust.
