John de Britto was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1647 and left a promising life at the royal court to become a Jesuit missionary in southern India. Following the example of earlier missionaries, he adopted the dress, diet, and customs of the local people in the Madurai region so he could share the Gospel from within their world. He was beheaded for the faith at Oriyur in 1693 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1947.
John de Britto gave up comfort and privilege to walk humbly alongside people very different from himself, loving them enough to learn their ways rather than demand his own. His gentle courage reminds us that faith is not about position or safety, but about giving ourselves away for love of God and neighbor, even when it costs everything.
