Saint Gildas (c. 500–570) was a British monk and one of the earliest historians of Britain, best known for his work De Excidio Britanniae, in which he called his people to repentance. After years of prayer, study, and preaching, he crossed to Brittany, where he founded the monastery of Rhuys and lived out his days as an abbot known for holiness and learning.
Gildas shows us that love sometimes speaks hard truths gently held in prayer: he grieved over the sins of his age not with bitterness but with a longing that souls turn back to God. His quiet, faithful life of study and monastic prayer reminds us that steady devotion, even hidden away, can bear light for generations.
