Elizabeth Ann Seton (1774–1821) was born in New York City, married William Seton, and raised five children before being widowed at age 29. After converting to Catholicism in 1805, she founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and opened a free Catholic school for girls, helping to begin Catholic parochial education in America. In 1975 she became the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized a saint.
Elizabeth knew deep grief — she lost her husband and two of her young daughters — yet she let sorrow open her heart wider to God instead of closing it. She shows us that holiness is lived in ordinary faithfulness: caring for children, teaching, trusting God one day at a time through loss. Her life reminds grieving families that love does not end, and that God can bring quiet, lasting good out of even the heaviest seasons.
